Finding Help

R Documentation

The first step in finding help is always to use the help command. So, if I’m trying to change the title of a plot and I don’t remember how, the first thing I would do is look at the documentation for the plot() command,

help(plot)

and the help would appear in the Help pane plot documentation Then, I would start scanning through the arguments of the function to see if there was something that caught my eye as related to changing the title. This figure shows what you see what you scroll down a little further, plot documentation part 2 Notice that it says “main an overall title for the plot: see title” This would give me the hint that main is an argument for the plot function, so I could try adding main=“Some title” to my plot arguments.

Classmates

If for some reason nothing caught my eye in the documentation, I would ask a classmate who was nearby. Oftentimes, other people remember what I do not!

Google

My third option would be to google for the issue, writing something like “R statistics add title to plot.” If you just google “R add title to plot” you will not get as good of results, because “R” is a hard thing to search for! The authors clearly named this language before the internet. Google help
